Dear Friends, I wanted to update you on the most recent campaign finance reports, which were filed on tax day, April 15. My report shows I have raised $261,000 since the middle of February, increasing my total for the cycle to $629,000. My broad base of support includes 194 individuals who gave $200 or less, and 180 individuals who gave $200 or more. Breaking those numbers down, 83% of my donors live in District Seven and 94% live in Texas. Meanwhile, less than 40% of my opponents individual donors live in District Seven, and less than half live in Texas. Im proud of the support Ive received from my friends and neighbors across District 7. They know me and support the work Im doing on their behalf. My opponent has attracted some media attention with his ability to raise money from New York, Massachusetts, and California, but hes had difficulty connecting with District Seven voters. Ive been outspent by large margins in previous races for the Texas House and the U.S....

John Culberson is the third Congressman to represent the Seventh District of Texas. The Texas Legislature created District Seven in 1965, and George H. W. Bush was elected as the first Congressman in 1966. Bill Archer succeeded him in 1970, and John Culberson was elected in 2000. John Culberson is a native Houstonian and a lifelong resident of District Seven. He and his wife, Belinda, were married in 1989, and they have an eleven year old daughter. The Culbersons are members of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church. Congressman Culberson grew up in West University Place, where he attended West University Elementary School. He graduated from Lamar High School, and went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Southern Methodist University in Dallas in 1981. District Profile

Congressman Culberson has represented District 7 since being elected to office in November of 2000. The district has a long history of electing Republicans; so much of that first race was decided in the Republican primary runoff in April of 2000.

If you want to read a very interesting article on that primary campaign, Campaigns and Elections magazine published this excellent piece by Mary Clare Jalonick.

District 7 was first created as a west Houston/Harris County district in 1966 when it elected then-local businessman George Herbert Walker Bush.

After President Bush decided to run for the US Senate in 1970, then-state Representative Bill Archer won election and represented the district for thirty years, rising to be the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.

The district has changed much over the years as the population of Houston has grown and the district lines have been redrawn as part of redistricting. Congressman Culberson was elected to represent one district of precincts in 2000, another set of lines for 2002, and even the lines for the 2004 election were new. The district now includes precincts from Jersey Village in the north, Bellaire in the South, Montrose in the east, and the western lines reach Highway 6.
