Rep. Culberson’s Statement on the Payroll Tax Cut Agreement

Congressman John Culberson (TX-07) issued the following statement after the House passed the payroll tax cut conference agreement:

“Today, the House passed the full-year extension of the payroll tax cut finally giving employers and hard-working Americans some level of economic certainty.  While the plan is not perfect, it does include important measures that have been left in limbo for far too long.  In addition to ensuring that payroll taxes will not go up at the end of the month, it also prevents a steep cut in Medicare reimbursements to our doctors to help ensure that they can afford to keep their doors open and that seniors will have access to the care that they need.  Under this bill, long-term unemployment benefits are cut and stricter job search guidelines, such as drug testing, are required.  And until we can repeal Obamacare, it slashes $5 billion, the largest cut yet, to help offset the costs.  The bottom line is that no one needs to see their taxes go up and their paychecks cut.  American workers earned it, and they, not Washington, should keep it. I remain committed to passing the balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, and I will also continue to fight spending as aggressively as possible with a Democrat controlled Senate and White House.”
